Pet Healthcare & Wellbeing
Helping Your Pets Live Happy, Healthy Lives
At PT PETS – Cannock Pet Shop, we believe that responsible pet ownership goes far beyond providing food and a comfortable place to sleep. Every animal has its own individual needs when it comes to nutrition, exercise, mental stimulation, hygiene, social interaction and healthcare. Understanding these needs is essential for helping pets enjoy long, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Whether you own a dog, cat, rabbit, bird, reptile or another small animal, providing the right environment, a balanced diet, regular activity and appropriate veterinary care can make a significant difference to their overall wellbeing. We've put together this helpful pet care guide to share practical information, everyday advice and important health considerations for some of the animals we all know and love.
Dog Care – Exercise, Nutrition & Everyday Health
Dogs are naturally active, social animals that benefit from regular exercise, mental stimulation, companionship and a consistent daily routine. Their individual requirements vary considerably depending on their breed, age, size, fitness level and general health.
Walking & Exercise
Daily walks are an important part of most dogs' routines, helping to maintain a healthy weight, support cardiovascular fitness, strengthen muscles and provide valuable opportunities to explore their surroundings. Many healthy adult dogs benefit from approximately 30 minutes to two hours of physical activity throughout the day, although some require considerably less or more. Puppies, elderly dogs and dogs with medical conditions may need shorter, gentler exercise sessions.
Walks are not just about physical exercise. Allowing dogs time to sniff, investigate and explore provides essential mental stimulation. Interactive toys, training sessions, puzzle feeders and supervised play can also help prevent boredom and encourage positive behaviour.
During particularly hot weather, avoid walking dogs on hot pavements, as these can burn their paw pads. Always provide access to fresh drinking water and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
Feeding & Nutrition
Dogs require a complete and balanced diet appropriate for their age, size and health needs. Puppies, adult dogs and senior dogs have different nutritional requirements, so choosing suitable food is important. Portion sizes should be adjusted according to body condition, activity level and feeding guidelines, with treats making up no more than approximately 10% of daily calorie intake.
Certain human foods, including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions and products containing xylitol, can be toxic to dogs and should never be offered.
Health & Grooming
Regular grooming helps maintain healthy skin and coats while providing an opportunity to check for lumps, irritation, parasites or injuries. Dogs also benefit from routine dental care, nail trimming, vaccinations and appropriate flea, tick and worm prevention.
Changes in appetite, drinking habits, energy levels, breathing or behaviour can sometimes indicate underlying health problems and should be discussed with a veterinary professional.
Cat Care – Nutrition, Enrichment & Wellbeing
Cats are intelligent, curious animals with natural instincts to climb, scratch, hunt and explore. Providing opportunities to express these behaviours is important for their physical and emotional wellbeing.
Exercise & Mental Stimulation
Although cats do not generally require daily walks like dogs, they still need regular physical activity. Interactive wand toys, climbing trees, scratching posts, tunnels and puzzle feeders can encourage movement and stimulate their natural hunting instincts.
Indoor cats particularly benefit from an enriched environment that includes elevated resting areas, hiding places, scratching surfaces and opportunities for daily play. Some cats can be trained to walk using a properly fitted harness, although this should be introduced gradually and only if the cat is comfortable.
Feeding & Nutrition
Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require specific nutrients naturally found in animal-based foods. A complete, balanced cat food appropriate for their life stage helps provide essential nutrients, including taurine, which is vital for heart, eye and general health.
Fresh drinking water should always be available. Wet food can contribute to hydration, while water fountains may encourage some cats to drink more frequently.
Health & Hygiene
Cats are naturally clean animals, but they still benefit from regular brushing, dental care and routine veterinary check-ups. Litter trays should be kept clean and positioned in quiet, accessible locations. A useful general guideline is one litter tray per cat, plus one additional tray.
Sudden changes in litter tray habits, appetite, grooming, behaviour or activity may indicate illness. A cat that is straining to urinate or unable to pass urine requires urgent veterinary attention.
Rabbit Care – Diet, Housing & Exercise
Rabbits are active, intelligent and highly social animals that require considerably more space, exercise and stimulation than many people realise. They are not suited to spending their lives confined to a small hutch or cage.
Exercise & Living Space
Rabbits need a spacious, secure living environment that allows them to run, hop, stretch, stand upright and explore naturally. As a widely recommended minimum for a compatible pair of average-sized rabbits, their permanent living area should measure approximately 3 metres by 2 metres, with a height of at least 1 metre.
Their enclosure should include a sheltered resting area, hiding places, suitable bedding, tunnels and safe objects to chew. Rabbits should have continuous access to an appropriately sized exercise area rather than relying solely on occasional supervised exercise.
Rabbits are social animals and generally benefit from living with a compatible, neutered rabbit companion.
Feeding & Nutrition
A rabbit's diet should consist primarily of unlimited good-quality grass hay, which is essential for maintaining healthy digestion and helping wear down continuously growing teeth.
Fresh leafy greens should be offered daily, alongside a measured quantity of suitable rabbit pellets. Sugary treats, fruit and carrots should only be given occasionally and in small quantities.
Fresh water must always be available.
Health & Grooming
Rabbit owners should regularly check their pet's teeth, eyes, ears, nails and rear end. Long-haired rabbits may require frequent brushing to prevent matting.
Rabbits are particularly vulnerable to gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially life-threatening condition in which normal gut movement slows or stops. A rabbit that stops eating or producing droppings requires immediate veterinary attention.
Vaccination against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease, including RHDV2, is also important in the UK.
Bird Care – Housing, Diet & Enrichment
Pet birds, including budgies, canaries, cockatiels and parrots, require suitable housing, appropriate nutrition, exercise and mental stimulation. Many bird species are highly intelligent and social, making environmental enrichment particularly important.
Cages & Living Environment
A bird's cage should be large enough to allow comfortable movement, wing stretching and appropriate activity. Cage requirements vary significantly by species, and birds that fly need sufficient horizontal space.
Natural perches of suitable sizes, bird-safe toys, feeding stations and opportunities for climbing and foraging can help maintain physical and mental wellbeing.
Many pet birds benefit from regular supervised flight or exercise outside their cage in a secure, bird-safe room. Windows, mirrors, ceiling fans, electrical cables and other household hazards should be carefully managed.
Feeding & Nutrition
Different bird species have different nutritional requirements. For many parrots and budgies, an appropriate formulated diet alongside suitable vegetables and other species-specific foods is preferable to a seed-only diet.
Foods such as avocado, chocolate and caffeine-containing products can be dangerous to birds and should never be offered.
Health & Hygiene
Birds can hide signs of illness, so owners should pay close attention to changes in behaviour, appetite, breathing, droppings and feather condition.
Cages, food bowls and water containers should be cleaned regularly. Birds should also be protected from cigarette smoke, aerosols, strong fumes and overheated non-stick cookware, which can release highly toxic fumes.
Regular health checks with an avian veterinarian are recommended.
Reptile Care – Temperature, Lighting & Habitat Requirements
Reptiles such as bearded dragons, geckos, snakes and tortoises have highly specialised care requirements. Unlike mammals, reptiles rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature, making correct enclosure conditions essential.
Heating & Temperature
Most commonly kept reptiles require a carefully controlled temperature gradient, allowing them to move between warmer and cooler areas of their enclosure.
Heating equipment should be suitable for the species and controlled using an appropriate thermostat. Digital thermometers and other monitoring equipment help owners maintain safe temperatures.
Incorrect temperatures can interfere with digestion, activity and overall health.
UVB Lighting & Habitat
Many reptiles require UVB lighting to support vitamin D3 production and healthy calcium metabolism. Requirements vary by species, and some reptiles have different lighting needs depending on their natural habitat and behaviour.
Insufficient UVB exposure or inadequate calcium intake can contribute to metabolic bone disease in susceptible reptiles.
Enclosures should also provide suitable humidity, ventilation, substrate, hiding places and climbing opportunities where appropriate.
Feeding & Nutrition
Reptile diets differ considerably between species. Bearded dragons generally consume a combination of suitable insects and plant matter, with proportions changing as they mature. Leopard geckos primarily eat insects, while many commonly kept snakes consume appropriately sized whole prey.
Owners should research their reptile's specific dietary requirements and use calcium or vitamin supplements where recommended.
Health & Hygiene
Reptiles can carry Salmonella bacteria even when they appear healthy. Hands should always be washed thoroughly after handling reptiles, their food or enclosure equipment.
Regular cleaning, correct environmental conditions and veterinary care from a reptile-experienced professional are important for preventing avoidable health problems.
Small Animal Care – Hamsters, Guinea Pigs & Other Companions
Small pets may require less space than larger animals, but they still need appropriate housing, nutrition, enrichment and healthcare.
Guinea pigs are social animals that should generally live with compatible guinea pig companions. They require unlimited hay, suitable vegetables and a daily source of vitamin C, which their bodies cannot produce.
Hamsters, by contrast, are generally solitary animals and should usually be housed individually. They need deep bedding for burrowing, an appropriately sized solid exercise wheel and sufficient floor space to explore and forage.
Small animals should be handled gently, provided with safe enrichment and monitored regularly for changes in eating, drinking or behaviour.
Everyday Pet Health – Important Things Every Owner Should Know
Regardless of the type of pet you own, several basic principles can help support long-term health and wellbeing.
-
Balanced Nutrition: Provide a complete, species-appropriate diet with the right nutrients for your pet's age, size and individual requirements.
-
Fresh Water: Ensure clean drinking water is available at all times, unless a veterinarian provides specific medical instructions.
-
Exercise & Enrichment: Encourage natural behaviours through appropriate activity, play, exploration and environmental enrichment.
-
Clean Living Conditions: Regularly clean bedding, enclosures, feeding equipment and living areas to maintain hygiene.
-
Routine Veterinary Care: Arrange appropriate check-ups, vaccinations, parasite prevention and dental assessments according to your pet's needs.
-
Safe Equipment: Choose suitable collars, harnesses, leads, cages, enclosures and toys that are appropriate for your pet's size and species.
-
Behavioural Awareness: Pay attention to changes in appetite, energy, movement, breathing or normal behaviour, as these can sometimes be early indicators of illness.
